Step 1: Equipment and Materials
You will need about of them. You will then turn your dollar bills into accordions. To do that you will zig-zag your dollar bill like Image 1 and finish with image 2. As a hint, I folded mine half way between the number 1 on the President side of the bill in the top left corner if that makes sense. Folding it there made it come out pretty even at the end. From there, I folded the bill in half to create an indent. Then I stuck 2 glue spots and pulled the sides of the bill down so it stuck. I did that for the other side as well.

You will then do the same thing with the bills to pieces of paper that are cut out that are the size of a dollar. You can do all dollar bills if you want but this looks just as awesome and saves you half the money! You will also need of these. Instead of using glue spots on these I hot glued which was quicker. NOTE: Be sure not to glue all the way to the indent so you can fit your ribbon in. String your dollar bills with ribbon alternating between the accordion dollars and the accordion papers. Did you know that leis are commonly presented when someone is arriving or leaving? The garland of flowers is a common symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor or greeting. They make for a unique and memorable gift that the gift recipient can wear on their special day. It requires very little folding and assembling and still looks great! The one I made using a standard Mardi Gras necklace only requires 14 money leis. Most other money lei tutorials require you to fold and attach money flowers. You can also choose to add pops of color to your money lei by incorporating silk flowers or by making flowers from colored paper and inserting them between the individual bills.

In this instructable I’m going to teach you how to make a money lei! It’s a great alternative graduation lei. Note: Takes considerable time. Did you use this instructable in your classroom? Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. Fold the bill horizontally to make a crease and open it up — this will make it easier to find the center later. Fold the bill back and forth to create fan pleats. Fold the fan in half, as shown in the picture. Draw about 14 feet of ribbon — does not have to be exact. There will be leftover which will be cut off. Clench the ribbon in half and crease as shown in the picture. Double knot the closed end — this is where the money lei will begin. Place the folded bill in-between the two ribbon strands after the knot. Make two knots to hold the bill in place.
