We all know that successful musicians make good money. But where does it come actually from? Record sales, concerts, or somewhere else? As you are aware, it takes countless hours to perfect an album and release it to the public. Due to the huge libraries of music available through online streaming services, physical album sales are declining, and people are becoming more selective about what they are buying. Digital sales for singles are often greater than album sales and streaming is becoming much more popular.
We spent a very long year surveying hip-hop workers across the country. Here are the results.
As strange as it might sound, different rules can apply to different styles of music. For instance, where I live in Calgary, Alberta, country gigs tend to pay a lot more than rock gigs. I know this from personal experience, as well as talking to fellow guitarists. The rap space is one where unique rules certainly can apply. Not every rapper has — or will have — so many ventures and revenue streams to draw from. You need capital to start a business, and you must have the smarts to run it or put the right people in place to run it for you if you want it to be successful. So, how do rappers make money? Much of it goes towards the label, distributor, manufacturer, retailer, and studio or production costs. It is, however, the cost of being a signed artist. What about independents? But even as an independent, you have certain costs. CD printing and replication, as well as distribution and studio production costs can add up.
WHO TOOK THIS SURVEY?
Everywhere I look, people are saying tours are where the real money is made in the music industry. True, concert attendance and participation is up. But we live in a time when even the tours of mainstream artists can bomb and backfire. And, when it comes to performing as an independent artist, it could prove hard enough to break even let alone make money but more on that in a moment. The Doolid article I mentioned earlier notes that the average concert attendance in was 9, people. As with recording and selling music, however, there are certain costs associated with performing.

Art By: mxcq. Will Smith—the star of the series—was new to acting, but acclaim as a prominent rap artist made the Philadelphia native a household face before the sitcom first aired. At the time, it was the highest-selling hip-hop album to date. Their music videos were constantly televised, and across the nation, their names sold out venues. Measuring their financial prosperity based on these metrics was to assume the two men were as rich as they were famous and successful. To some degree, they were. Smith explained how careless, extravagant spending and not paying his taxes depleted all the funds that rap had rewarded him. Based on Brown’s nearly decade-long career and his reputation as a successful hip-hop artist, there’s a reasonable expectation of fortune. Touring expenses, funding, advances, splits, and even unpaid royalties can all have crucial effects on the lives and livelihoods of our favorite artists. Not everything directly affects how much money an artist has the ability to earn, but there are variables that impact how much is actually pocketed. Yet, the praise of art, not the price of art, is what ultimately takes precedence. Rap is deeply rooted in outspoken, unapologetic braggadocio, but the extravagance that comes with the entertainment is often misleading. For many rappers, living comfortably or simply quietly maintaining is the goal. In hip-hop, the topic of money is almost always an armor of boasts.

Rappers Are Making Big Money Selling Weed—Legally
Although we are not going solely off of net worth, to put it into perspective, Jay-Z sits at a clean million, Drake is at million, and Lil Pump stands at 6. Music is my prime focus because Music is what started it all for these three rappers and its just so happens to be the most accessible number I can. It seems rappers make quite a bit of money on their music alone and in some cases like Jay-Z, are able to use their popularity to make more lucrative investments.
